WasaCon's Peltokaari day care centre receives historic five stars in Rakennustiedo's environmental rating

The construction project has achieved the highest possible five-star rating in Rakennustiedo's environmental rating. This is the first time in Finland that an office and service building has achieved this rating.

WasaCon implemented the Peltokaari kindergarten in Tuusula as a KVR contract. The kindergarten has facilities for 126 kindergarten children and will start its operations in August 2024.

- The requirements of the environmental classification guided our solutions from the start. We challenged our subcontractors to comply with these requirements by setting strict criteria for environmental targets in their contracts. In our material procurement, we emphasised ecology and ensured compliance with the necessary environmental classifications. On site, we put a lot of effort into monitoring the implementation and collecting the evidence needed for auditing in real time. We held regular meetings to monitor the achievement of objectives and plan future measures," says Urpo Koivusaari, who was the regional manager for the project.

- We succeeded in engaging the people working on the project to achieve the environmental objectives set. Special thanks go to the site management and procurement teams who helped us achieve this important recognition," Koivusaari continues.

- This achievement shows that even with a short timeframe, a sustainable, environmentally friendly building can be built, where children have excellent conditions to grow towards school," says Koivusaari.

Environmental classification from design to maintenance

The Building Information Environmental Classification is a tool that guides sustainable construction and property maintenance. It has already guided the environmental sustainability of more than 400 construction projects and helps in the environmentally responsible management and implementation of construction projects as well as in sustainable maintenance.

An environmentally friendly building saves water and energy and produces less carbon dioxide emissions.

- Rakennustiedo's environmental classification is an aid in implementing the environmental responsibility of buildings throughout their life cycle, emphasises Petri Jaarto, Product Manager at Rakennustiedo.
