Job Manager Veljo Kärbo: "I feel like I'm on a winning team."
Veljo Kärbo, civil engineer, works as a site manager in WasaCon's Helsinki office.
Veljo has over twenty years of experience in the construction industry.
"First I worked as a carpenter for about ten years. Gradually I became interested in the management side of the job and then I applied for a degree in civil engineering. I graduated in 2013 and since then I've worked as a foreman and assistant foreman, mainly in the housing sector." Veljo explains.
As a Project Manager, he is responsible for WasaCon's projects in the Southern Finland region. Veljo is currently working on a construction project for a kindergarten in Tuusula.
"I make sure that the projects are completed on time, within the agreed budget and that the quality is impeccable. I also do a lot of procurement," he says.
The new job was a step out of my comfort zone
Veljo says that he wasn't really looking for a new job, but after much deliberation he decided to take the job that was offered to him.
"I myself had thought that I would only be ready for the job as a manager in five years' time. The decision to change jobs was not an easy one, but eventually the new, more challenging role began to look attractive. During the recruitment process, I asked a lot of questions about WasaCon's future plans and I was also impressed by the company's good momentum," he says.
"The work has largely lived up to my expectations - there has been a lot to learn and no escaping the challenges. However, I am proud that I dared to step out of my comfort zone and take on more responsibility," he says.

WasaCon is a buzz of activity
WasaCon has grown in recent years, expanding its operations from Vaasa to the capital region of Southern Finland. Veljo says that the positive momentum is reflected in everything the company does.
"We meet regularly with the staff, and that has given me a lot of information about the company's financial situation and future prospects, for example. There's a good spirit of working together and I feel like I'm on a winning team," he says.
Free time is also a team sport
Veljo describes his work community in sporting terms as a winning team, and the same goes for his home team.
"We like to do sports as a family - skiing in winter and cycling in summer. We also go swimming regularly, it's something me and my two daughters do together."
