The first phase of the Kiuaskallio sports hall is finished ahead of schedule

WasaCon was selected in 2023 to carry out the renovation and extension of the Kiuaskallio sports hall in Kurikka. The first phase of the technical KVR contract has been completed well ahead of schedule and the facilities have been handed over to the client.

The construction work started in March 2023 with the demolition of existing buildings, the replacement of the old domed hall's drainage and splash guards and the strengthening of the foundations. The design of the extension was started immediately after the contract was signed and earthworks started at the end of April 2023.

Bumps in the road - new plans for the renovation of the domed hall

Renovation work on the old domed hall had to be halted in June 2023, but plans were revised when the building inspectorate announced that after reinforcements, the dome's glue-laminated arches should be able to withstand the loads required today.

The original plan was to renovate the domed hall and the gateway, but it was decided to demolish them because it would have been much more expensive to repair them than to rebuild. In addition, the decision was taken taking into account that there are always risks involved in renovating the old.

The extension itself, which included the construction of a gym and weight room, as well as sauna, washroom, toilet and changing room facilities with cleaning and technical facilities to serve the future swimming pool, was completed according to plan. The total area of the extension is approximately 1 350 m2. The extension was handed over to the client on 15 February 2024.

- WasaCon proved to be a responsible partner by asking the client to stop the work when the deterioration of the part under renovation was revealed as the work progressed. The client responded quickly and, with good cooperation between the client and the designers, the plans and decisions for the new hall were completed in record time. By reacting quickly and in a timely manner, we were able to save on the overall cost of the project, and as a result, users will have new and modern training facilities when the second phase is completed," says Veikko Jokimäki, Production Manager at WasaCon.

Second construction phase to start in April

Design work and tendering for the new sports hall is currently underway. The construction phase will start in April.

A new rectangular sports hall will be built to replace the old domed hall. Compared to the original, the floor area of the hall will increase by about 200 square metres. The facilities have been designed by Jorma Paloranta Architects.

The new sports hall will be equipped with a running track, a long jump and a playing field. When closed, the long jump area will be covered by a deck, making it part of the running track. The free height of the indoor part of the hall will be at least 6 metres.
The new sports hall will also include a technical room, an inva toilet and two toilets, as well as a storage room located in a shelter for the public. A sand pitch will be installed on the playing field. The playing field will be surfaced with lines for the baseball home plate and the football field.

Construction will be completed in September-October 2024.
