WasaCon was selected in 2023 to carry out the renovation and extension of the Kiuaskallio sports hall in Kurikka. The first phase of the technical KVR contract was completed in February 2024 and continued with phase 2.
The original plan was to renovate the domed hall and the gateway, but it was decided to demolish them because they would have been much more expensive to repair than to rebuild. In addition, the decision was made taking into account that there are always risks involved in renovating the old. Construction work on the new sports hall could start in April 2024.
A new rectangular sports hall was built to replace the old domed hall. Compared to the original, the floor area of the hall will increase by about 200 square metres. The facilities were designed by Jorma Paloranta Architects.
The new sports hall was equipped with a running track, a long jump and a playing field. When the long jump is closed, it is covered by a deck, making it part of the running track. The free height in the hall section is at least six metres.
The new sports hall also includes a technical room, an inva toilet and two toilets, as well as a storage room in the shelter. A sand pitch will be installed on the playing field. The surface of the playing field will have lines for the baseball home plate and the football field.
Construction was completed in October 2024.
